What always put me off cottage cheese from the get go was always the lumpy look of it and it just looked so blah. So imagine my reaction when i got the email saying, i was going to be reviewing the new Gay Lea Nordica Smooth Cottage Cheese. Hahaha, it was that moment i knew, i had to practice what i preach daily to my 3 year extra picky eater of a daughter-
For someone who has never tried cottage cheese, i was very happy to know it was smooth and came in 3 different flavors- Lemon, Salted Caramel and Vanilla Bean. Haa, thank you so much Gay Lea!! I love, love, love caramel so that one was an easy choice.
Where To Buy
Sorry folks but it is only available in Ontario, Canada in major stores (except for No Frills and Walmart). So i went out to the closest Loblaws grocery store in my area to get my Salted Caramel flavored Gay Lea Cottage Cheese, but guess what? They were already sold out on the other flavors but luckily for me i found just one pack of the salted caramel sitting quietly in the refrigerator. I immediately thought that was a good sign.
The Quick Recipes That Helped
Without tasting it yet, I knew the easiest way to overcome my fear was to add it into some of our favorite everyday snacks or meal at home. So i came up with these 3 recipes to help:
1. Biscuits/Crackers With Salsa Topping
I got a box of "cheese" biscuits or like some may call it, cheese crackers and i spread some of the cottage cheese on a few and added some mild salsa on top. Omg, loooove. I didn't even have to add any salt or pepper. I could definitely taste the caramel in the cottage cheese and with that spicy kick from the salsa, i was sold! What i will do next time is simply stir in the salsa with the cottage cheese and then serve on the crackers. This is best for snack time and great for dinner parties at home for my guests.
2. A Spread on Bread
I love bread in any form, shape and size and in this case, i thought of using the smooth cheese as a spread. I mixed in some smooth peanut butter with it and smeared it all over my buttery croissant. Oh, heaven! I figured the sweet buttery croissant with the peanut butter and the caramel will be a knockout blend of flavors and yes, it was! I love this with my morning coffee to help balance that sweetness. Meanwhile, a multi-grain bread or wheat bread will be other great options too.
3. The Berry Cereal Breakfast Parfait
Cereal is my go-to breakfast meal if i need something quick and filling or if i really can't come up with a creative breakfast meal for the day. So instead of dumping the cereal in a bowl of milk, i made a parfait using the salted caramel smooth cottage cheese. If i have to do fruits, strawberry and banana would be my favorites but i have heard so many amazing things about blueberries which i used here. I started with the cottage cheese at the bottom then followed by some Almond Flax Fiber Cereal, then the fruits and more of the cottage cheese on top. Delicious!
Eating It Just By Itself
So after trying it on biscuits, with bread and cereal, i finally just tried the cottage cheese by itself straight from the cup and it tastes just like the the finest type of yogurt or even better. It isn't salty a all. It really tastes just right. Whaaat?! Is this what I have been missing? I already love yogurt and i was pleasantly surprised! Who knew? Mind you, i have not read any other reviews about it anywhere else so this really came as a beautiful surprise in a cup. It comes in 100g cup that is sold in a pack of four. This little cup of Gay Lea Nordica Smooth Cottage Cheese is loaded with 10g of protein per serving, 250g more calcium than leading Greek yogurts, 115g of calcium and just 110g of calories.
