Culture is an artistic expression and a way of life. That to me, describes the soul of fashion. Never have I worn a dashiki dress or mixed dashiki prints but I always wanted the opportunity. As fate would have it, during my trip to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, I unexpectedly found one, and a perfect bag to go with from a local store in the city.
It is not very often that i walk into a store and ask them nicely, to give me exactly what that life-size doll of a human representation in your window is wearing... a.k.a Mannequin. This is because anything on display has definitely been touched, pulled and manhandled without care by a gazillion number of shoppers walking in and out of the store but this time it didn't even matter. If I could have just bought it with the mannequin as-is, I would have. It was that perfect look and perfect moment that didn't need to be altered.
For those who may not know, Dashiki is an African piece and i love it. Mixing prints could be scary at first but i think the idea is to start with simple prints like stripes until you master it. I find it to be fun and liberating just like the culture of fashion. This look is very bohemian chic, comfortable, unique and colorful.
Find out the dilemma a friend faces on her choice to give up on wearing a Dashiki or not in the video below :).
